Rise Of The Arabs
Introduction
Although Morocco’s football history dates back to the 1950s, the stability of its national team was rarely of note — until recently. Over the past few years, Morocco has made a dramatic improvement in the international and intercontinental football scenes, becoming one of the best teams in Africa and putting itself firmly on the map. Most notably, Morocco managed to qualify for both the 2018 and 2019 editions of the World Cup. This achievement was by no means an easy feat, but it marks a huge success for Moroccan football as a whole and is evidence of the country’s rise in international football.
Historical Context
Morocco’s first major tournament appearance came with their qualification for the 1970 FIFA World Cup in Mexico. Although they fared poorly—not managing to win a single game or score any goals—the tournament was a remarkable moment for the country and signaled that their prowess on the pitch was now on show to an even larger audience across continents (Africa v Europe). Following this historic campaign, Morocco failed to qualify for another licensed World Cup event until 1998, when they again failed to make it out of group play. In recent years however, there has been a resurgence in Moroccan football - more specifically since 2013 - when Herve Renard was appointed as coach and tasked with qualifying them for the 2015 Africa Cup Of Nations following nearly two decades without attending such tournaments. By winning this tournament not only did he add several criteria points which enhanced Morocco's potential rank further up in FIFA's classification system but also provided players exposure to high-level footballing which began infusing a brand new belief at all levels within soccer circles within the North African nation. This accomplishment proved catalytic as it elevated Morocco one step closer towards realizing its ambitions of appearing at consecutive World Cups through hard work from players continually getting better coupled with other factors including modernization of infrastructure as well as improvements made technically & tactically amongst coaching setup staff including Managerial head over 5 seasons leading up to 2019 Cairo extravaganza where could potentially write history by claiming first Arab African Title crown since Tunisia 2004 victorious run.
